Protect crucial/personal information :
FTP details, email, bank user names &
passwords
Be careful with crucial information like your
FTP details, email, bank or website, usernames
and passwords and other important information.
Never discuss or email details like this using a
secure email, or send them to your webmaster
using a chat program. Also do not use one handy
tool to remind or list all your usernames and
passwords. Also ask yourself would other people
be able to find or get my details easy? Don't
have them on your desktop or in a text file
named: MyPass.txt. Once it is easy to find or
remember for you it will also be easy for
abusers and hackers.
Change your login and password frequently to
avoid security risks. IF you do need to send a
user name or password to a webmaster or person
you know he can be trusted. Then do not type the
user name make a image.gif or JPEG that contains
the details and send it as a attachment you can
even name the image mynewbike.gif and then
attach it to your email . The receiver will be
able to see your login password in the image
while no hacker is aware of crucial details
being send. Do not think ahhh! This will not
happen to me or use. It can happen to any one.
Specially on computers at work or computers that
are shared by multi users. Best place to save
usernames and passwords is in your mind. Also
make sure passwords are never easy to guess for
a outsider. Always use more then 8 caretakers
and use a combination of letters, numbers, caps
and the special keyboard caretakers. As these
are hard to guess or krack for anyone
interested. Change important passwords often.
Never use one and the same user name or password
for more things at once. Never send any personal
details to anyone who do not know or trust or
claim to be from Paypal, ebay or other programs
as these companies would never ask for personal
details using email. If they need your info to
be updated you will probably see a text claiming
so one you login to there system. Be Warned!

Safe surfing on the internet 10
security tips!
Simple steps to take to help protect yourself on
the web.
As a PC user you are exposed to the risk of
being infected by a virus any time you receive
and open email and when you are surfing the net
or downloading and opening files. In order to
ensure that you can surf the net safely and
receive email without needing to worry about
your PC facing any nasty problems with or
attacks from viruses, we've compiled some good
tips on how you can enhance your security when
using the Internet:
1) Use your common sense and be careful
whenever you are using the Internet, as well as
when sending and receiving email.
2) Change your password often , at least
every three months. In fact, Microsoft
recommends you to change your password as often
as every month so as to prevent unauthorised
persons from getting access to your Internet
account and your mail messages on your Internet
Service Provider's (ISP) server. 2b) Also useful
is using a screen saver that requires a password
to get access to the computer desktop. This way
you can basically lock access to your computer
in your coffee brake or toilet visit etc. Screen
savers are often free available
3) Use a mix of 8 numbers, letters, CAPS and
other special characters in your passwords.
Keep it secret. The more combinations there are,
the more options you have. This will also make
it harder for unauthorised persons to find out
your password - remember to keep it top
secret!
4) Use a firewall . A firewall software
is a security system that acts as a protective
boundary between a network or individual
computer and the outside world, by shielding
your system when you're online. Windows XP comes
with an in-built Internet Connection Firewall,
so you can use the Internet without having to
worry about making your network or data
vulnerable. Firewall will block access and the
use of all internet ports not used other then
required for internet or ftp. This will block
access for hackers to your computer and will
also stop port sniffers.Firewall software can be
found on any PC software download site.
5) Never open attachments from people you do
not know and be careful about opening
attachments in general, as they can contain
dangerous viruses. Even when you receive an
attachment from someone you do know, you should
be careful opening it if you aren't sure about
what the file contains. Many viruses are spread
through being automatically forwarded to all the
contacts in a person's address book, which means
that you can receive email with files infected
by viruses even from people you know. One bad
attachment can screw up your whole system.
Beyond easy repair!
6) Make sure you log out from your Internet
account . Logging out closes down your
connection and prevents harmful programs or
unauthorized users from accessing your Internet
account. Do not stay connected to the internet
after you finished surfing the web or checked
your mail. Close it when you go work or watch TV
or eat. IF really wish to stay online. Make sure
you use a good firewall.
7) Do not reply to junkmail - Ignore
SPAM!, Also known as spam, because if you do
there is the risk of your email system becoming
overloaded with mail messages, which can block
the system. Never reply to unwanted spam emails!
Not even if they contain a link that says please
click here if you no longer wish to receive
emails. As soon as you reply to spam the spammer
knows your email address is in use and correct
and the spammer will send you lots more and
probably sell your email address also to large
companies who buy email address for more spam
use. Never click a link in a email to have
yourself removed of a list. 90% of the remove
links are basically links to add your email
address to a new list or to check if you have
received any spam! Best way to avoid spam is
ignore it and trash it as soon as possible. Use
filters in your email client to auto delete
spam. Webmaster can install the perl script
Robot Control Pro a security program for
websites that will block any robot in a search
for email addresses. Always be careful to who
you give your email address. Many forms on the
internet ask for a email address. Not because
they need it, but just to be able to spam you.
If any form asks for a email address it is wish
to use a free email address sash as hotmail or
yahoo then your own internet provider email
address. This way all spam goes to the free
account and not your real account.
8) Always use antivirus software. This
minimises the risk of you having any virus
problems. Make sure that you update your
antivirus software regularly so that it can
detect even the newest viruses.
9) Specify a security level for your web
browser . Always follow the security
information which comes with your web browser
and specify a security level. In Internet
Explorer you can specify the following security
settings: Low, Medium-low, Medium or High. For
more information on how to set the security
level in Internet Explorer, go to the section
Secure Your Software. If you are running
Microsoft Windows XP, make sure you have the
in-built Internet Connection Firewall switched
on.
10) When you are shopping on the Internet you
should only deal with web sites which are
supported by SSL technology. (Secure Sockets
Layer). Microsoft Internet Explorer has an
integrated system for SSL and other security
services which guarantee the security of your
transactions over the Internet. An SSL
connection encrypts information transferred
between your web browser and the seller's
e-commerce site. Web sites with a secure
connection always have an address starting with:
https://, instead of just the
standard: http://. Never provide any
credit card or important details on a none
secured order form (not secure http://). Always
check if the order form/web store is using a
secure encrypted data sending system. (secure is
https://). Your browser should display a golden
lock in the left bottom of the browser window
and the URL should start with https://
This means the form is save to use!
